Five tips for choosing children’s toys

Christmas is just around the corner – and with it comes the time to compensate our children for their wonderful behaviour during the year. Are you looking for children’s toys and you don’t know what to get them? Then read on! Here are some tips to bear in mind when it comes to choosing the ideal toy for your children.

  1. Think before doing

If you don’t want the toy to become just another object in the collection, think hard before you go out shopping. It’s important to teach our children from a very early age to value what they have, and toys play an essential role in this lesson.

  1. Their tastes and preferences, but also their needs

When it comes to buying toys, we shouldn’t forget our children’s own personality and tastes, but it’s also important that toys should help reinforce the skills and qualities that most need it. So for example if your child is shy, buy him a game for various players – this is a way of inviting him to be more open and playing with other children.

  1. Less is more

There are some toys which are apparently very simple, but which help reinforce children’s imagination and so make everything much more enjoyable. The most expensive toys aren’t always the best. We often feel tempted to spend more on a sophisticated toy that turns the child into no more than a spectator.

  1. Age matters

There are different toys for each age group. Firstly because at each stage in life we develop different skills, and secondly because there is a risk factor due to the components of the toy. So for very young children, toys that make them move and which are nice to look at and touch are ideal. As our children grow, the best toys are those that reinforce family relations, and then, from about six years on, toys they can play with by themselves.

  1. Avoid excesses

We often make the mistake of giving our children too many toys, especially at Christmas. This means they don’t value them as they should. It’s really important to rationalize when you give your children presents, and avoid building mountains of toys. If you see that they don’t pay much attention to a particular toy and you don’t want to give it away, a good trick is to hide it for a while and then give it back to them. They will like it again just as if it were new.
