Enjoying a day out in the snow with children is one of the best options for a family weekend away in the winter. Most children love it and have a great time! Whether they do some sport, like skiing or snowboarding, or just have fun throwing snowballs, making snowmen or sledging, there are loads of ways they can have fun in the snow.
However, if you are planning a trip to the snow with children, it’s important to take a series of precautions, as the cold, sunburn or the possibility of having an accident are risks for them. So we’ll give you, stitch by stitch, some tips for having a great day out with the family in the snow.
How old should children be before they can play in the snow?
The most recommendable age for a trip to the snow is 3-4 years old, as they can move round by themselves, keep their balance and they also have tons of energy. They can even start snow sports with no need for worries.
They can enjoy their first contact with the snow at an even younger age – at two years old they can enjoy going on a sledge.
If your baby is just a few months old, there are many ski stations that have a kindergarten and snow-gardens with lots of things for them to do. At 3 or 4 months they can enjoy this option while you enjoy a day out skiing.
What clothes should they wear?
Children should be well wrapped up to protect them from the cold, but not excessively so, because if they are going to run around and play they will end up sweating. In an earlier post, we spoke about how to keep children warm in winter, without using either too many clothes or not enough.
Following are the basic garments for the snow:
- Cotton underwear. It is important for them to wear undergarments that are breathable, and let them move around in total freedom.
- Waterproof and padded outerwear. They should wear a waterproof coat and trousers. Gloves and mittens should also be waterproof.
- A warm jersey – made of wool or polyester. The important thing is that it is comfortable and nice and warm.
- Footwear. When we are in the snow, our feet get colder than any other part of the body. We should keep them warm with woollen or thermal socks and waterproof boots with a fur lining and thick sole to insulate them from damp.
- Bonnet. To keep their heads and ears warm. In addition to protecting them, some designs will give them a fun look, like this one from our autumn-winter collection.
Other tips for playing in the snow
- On a mountain it is important to take good care against the sun, as it reflects on the snow and can seriously damage our eyes.
- Sun cream and lip salve. The face is the most exposed part of the body, so we should use a high protection sun cream (50+SPF) and a good lip protector.
- For snow sports or sledging on a mountain, children should wear a helmet, as an accident or just crashing into a stone or ice could give them a serious head wound, and other types of injury.
