Preparing your children for going back to school – some tips

Preparing your children for going back to school

Is it hard to go back to work after your holidays? Well imagine the mental effort for your children when they have to go back to school. Apart from having a longer summer holiday than you, they are younger and changes affect them more.

School is just around the corner. In a few days your children will be back in the routine of classes after a long summer holiday, so it’s up to you to encourage them so that it isn’t so hard for them.
In this post we’ll try to identify some key elements to help your young ones in these times of change.

Change routines bit by bit

As far as sleep and rest are concerned, you should get your children used to the new timetable bit by bit. In other words, if they have been going to bed later all summer, you will have to set a new routine for every day until it fits in with what school and your job requires. We can’t expect them to go to sleep at nine all of a sudden. And don’t forget that the younger our children are, the more difficult it will be for them to adapt.

The same goes for other daily routines: the afternoon nap or rest after lunch, time for the television, meal times … Set patterns for every day and you will help make things easier for them and make changes less brusque.

Involve the whole family in going back to school

Get organized to set new timetables. For example, you can go shopping together to buy new school material. It can be fun and you will get them involved in something that really concerns them.
Make the most of these and other moments, such as mealtimes, to talk about going back to class and remember anecdotes from last year. Learn to listen to them and clear up all their doubts and fears.

Adapt your activities to going back to school

If during the summer you set a time for your children to focus on something like reading or playing educational games, it will be much easier; but if you didn’t, there is still time to make going back to school less complicated. Encourage them to do things that require concentration so that they get used to it bit by bit.
You can also try to organize events with other children from their class so that they spend time together before classes actually start.

Something new

To make them feel more enthusiastic on the first day, it’s a good idea to use something for the first time: new clothes, a new rucksack, a new look. Everyone enjoys wearing something new!
